Swampus Returns New Orleans

Sustainability on Parade

You are invited to be part of something new and rooted in what many of us have already been doing for years.

We’re organizing a Halloween-season walking parade called Swampus Returns – Sustainability on Parade, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

This isn’t a new Krewe, it’s a platform to highlight the work walking Krewes and community creatives have already been doing around:

  • Foot-powered parading
  • Handmade and upcycled costuming
  • Sustainable throws and low-waste celebrations
  • Artist-led, non-corporate experiences

Our goal is to build a thoughtful, intentional alternative to plastic-heavy, corporate parades. But we won’t move forward unless we know the interest is there, which is why this short survey is so important.

Please take a minute to complete this interest form by May 8 (end of day):

If your Krewe is on board, or even just curious, this is how we’ll know we have a strong enough base to commit to permits, planning, and moving forward.

Thanks so much for your time and for all the work you do to make New Orleans parade culture more creative, expressive, and sustainable.

FAQs

Yes and that’s exactly the point.

Swampus Returns didn’t invent sustainability, it’s here to celebrate what’s already been happening.

Walking Krewes across New Orleans have been quietly leading the way for years with:

  • Handmade costumes
  • Foot-powered contraptions
  • Upcycled and sustainable throws
  • Deep creativity and artistic freedom

The difference is, while most walking Krewes have evolved naturally, adding these elements bit by bit without making a fuss, Swampus Returns puts those values front and center.

We’re here to make a  statement:

The culture of expecting tons of cheap, plastic throws at every parade has to change.

We believe the future is:

  • Thoughtful, sustainable throws
  • Fewer, higher-quality items
  • Art over excess
  • Celebration without waste

This parade is about honoring the work so many have already done to make parading more intentional, art-driven, and kind to the land we call home.

We’re here to rise together. Setting a joyful new standard for how we parade without trashing the environment.

While much of the country is draped in pumpkins and plastic skeletons, New Orleans has something they don’t: the swamp.

Swampus Returns celebrates the eerie, magical, uniquely Southern spirit of Halloween in the Deep South. Where fog creeps through cypress trees, Spanish moss sways like ghosts, and the creatures of the bayou come to life.

This isn’t a typical Halloween parade.
It’s not corporate. It’s not plastic-heavy.
It’s not designed to throw mountains of junk to spectators.

Swampus Returns is the exact opposite of that.

It’s a foot-powered, community-led celebration rooted in:

  • Local culture
  • Creative freedom
  • Eco-consciousness
  • And the weird, wonderful energy of New Orleans

We’re offering locals and visitors a one-of-a-kind Halloween experience. A haunted swamp procession they won’t find anywhere else in the country.

It’s spooky. It’s sustainable. It’s 100% ours.

No. Swampus Returns is not a traditional Mardi Gras-style riding krewe.

We’re 100% walking, DIY, and seasonal. This is a fall parade held during Halloween season, and we prioritize sustainable costuming and throws.

Anyone 18+ with a costume and a commitment to our values can join!

Want to join as a group? Bring 5 or more and register early as a Swamp Pod (sub-krewe) and get a group discount.

All participants must register in advance.

Note: Kids can attend the parade as spectators, but this is an adults-only parade.

This is a costume-required parade!

Your look should tie into the theme of spooky swamp mythology, but we interpret that broadly:

  • Ghost gators
  • Cypress witches
  • Mud monsters
  • Fog spirits
  • Swamp sirens

All costumes should be creative, homemade or upcycled when possible and plastic free.

Need help? We’ll be sharing costume workshops and inspiration soon!

We’re going throw-optional and sustainability-first.

No plastic beads, no individually wrapped candy, no glitter confetti.

If you want to throw something, it must be:

  • Handmade or locally produced
  • Eco-friendly or reusable
  • Packaged sustainably
  • Limited in quantity. We prefer quality over volume

A detailed route map will be shared as details settle!

Yes! We encourage walking Krewes and creative collectives to join us as Swamp Pods, our term for sub-krewes in the parade.

Bring your Krewe’s aesthetic into the swamp and help expand the mythology.

Swamp Pods get discounted rates (early), featured placement, and the opportunity to help shape the parade’s vibe.

Swampus Returns is strictly foot-powered. No tractors, no golf carts, no gas powered anything.

Small hand-pulled or wearable contraptions are allowed (think puppets, wagons, carts, stilt rigs)—but they must be:

  • Manually pushed or pulled
  • Safe and manageable by your group
  • In keeping with the spirit of the event

If you have questions please ask.

We’re a swamp parade—we expect a little moisture!

We’ll roll in light rain. In the case of lightning, flooding, or unsafe conditions, we’ll follow city guidance and announce any changes through our website and social media.

We love the little ghouls, but this parade is designed for adults only due to the time, tone, and themes.

Feel free to bring your family to spectate along the route!
